Hypothermia

Hypothermia
According to WHO-An abnormal thermal state when the news born care temperature drops below  36.5°C  causes subsequent to failure of homeostatic mechanism to keep the body tem. with in the thermoregulator zone.

Temperature

  1. Normal body temperature- 36.5°C to  37.5°C
  2. Hypothermia-Axillary temperature less than  36.5°C
  3. Cold stress- 36°C to  36.4°C
  4. Moderate Hypothermia- 32°C to  35.9°C
  5. Severe Hypothermia-< 32°C
S/s
  1. Acrocynosis (peripheral vasoconstriction)
  2. cool extremities
  3. Delayed peripheral capillary refill time (CRT)
  4. Restlessness the lethargic
  5. Bradycardia
  6. Hypo tension
  7. Tachypnea and distress
  8. Decrease feeding /sucking
  9. Abdominal distension
  10. Vomiting
Management
  1. Method of tem maintenance include skin to skin contact (KMC=Kangura medical care) 
  2. Warm room
  3. Radiant warmer
  4. Incubator
  5. Increase ambient tem. by use of hot air blowrs or a 200watt bulbs
  6. Ensure frequent feeding to prevent hypoglycemia
  7. Monitor vital
  8. Provide oxygen, antibiotic,saline bolus
  9. IF shock I/V Dextrose 10% and Vit k 
Prevention of hypothermia
  1. Warm developing room
  2. Warm resuscitation
  3. Immediate drying
  4. Skin to skin contact
  5. Breast feeding
  6. Appropriate clothing
  7. 'Mother and baby together
  8. Professional alertness
  9. Warm transportation
  10. Bathing postponed
